Satellite Notebooks review
I bought it to replace my 8 year ancient Dell 15.4″ laptop. I was pleasantly surprised that the power supply and the weight if this laptop was about the same as my ancient, much smaller Dell. As the other reviews indicate, this is a huge laptop. With a huge screen, it naturally comes with a large footprint, superfluous weight and shorter battery life. For me, the superfluous size and weight are worth it. The screen is incredible. The sound is excellent but for some reason I may possibly barely hear the audio when playing a blue ray disk, even with the volume up all the way. I don’t know if it was the computer or the disk to blame. For other things the sound volume is fine.
I plugged the HDMI productivity into my 1080P TV and place on a blue-ray disk. It worked fantastic! It even somehow allowed me to control the blue-ray player through my TV remote by carriage the orders from my TV, through the HDMI cable, to the blue ray player.
For any Linux fans out there, I installed Ubuntu 9.10 and I am having a tough of time getting any networking to work. I suspect that will fixed in an upcoming release as the company that makes network adapter does support a native Linux driver. I just haven’t been able to get it to work (yet).
Bottom line, if you reflect you want this, you may want to see and handle a similar laptop at a brick and morter store to be sure it is what you want. If you are OK with the size and weight of it, I reflect you will like nearly everything else about it.
It is a very excellent computer, lots of reminiscence, lots of space, but the only huge problem that I did’nt map out in anticipation of I recieved it, is that it’s really really huge, so it’s not simple to transport.I knew it was going to be huge, which I wanted because of my work, but I did’nt thought that it would be that much.
This was for my son stationed in Iraq. He is able to play online games with it and stay in touch with Mom by Skype. So far it’s holding up to the wind and sand very well.
This is a large machine. Do not expect to carry this laptop around. I carry it from my home to our vacation place on weekends, but it is just too large to lug places–that being said, I wish a 21″ or 23″ machine was available. It has an outstanding screen and I have completely replaced my desktop with it. Battery life is small because of the large screen. The battery lasts just long enough on a full charge for my kids to watch a movie on the dvd player. This isn’t an issue for me, but it force be for others. It compares very well to the 18″ HP. My ancient machine was the 17.3″ HP and this machine is a bit nicer–quicker, clearer screen, better screen, more reminiscence, but it is a year newer.
I like this laptop. It was an unexpected anniversary gift and I use it continually. I reflect the reminiscence, sound and many features are abundant. It is large, but if you’re looking for one of this size – I highly recommend this one!
