BitDefender Offers Three Levels of Unrivaled Security

Reviewing anti-virus software is a thankless task. It installed easily and hasn’t caused any problems, but it also hasn’t caught any viruses. Is this because I haven’t touched any, or is it because it’s missing some? I have no way of knowing. Anyhow, the 3 PC model is nice, because even in my mostly-Mac household we have two Windows licenses running under VMWare Fusion.
I have usually used Norton harvest for protection on my computer. It is nice to give another product a try to have a comparison. The clear things about this are the value you get for your money and several excellent features that Bitdefender can build upon. The negatives are the reminiscence treatment(which is very high) and the problems this has running on older computers. I don’t reflect this is a terrible product, but I do feel there are better options out there. If Bitdefender can improve the product just a small for next year I will give it another try.
First of all, my desktop is about 5 years ancient. Second, the superfluous software helped hinder and slowed my computer a down a bit especially the internet. While I found the software to be easily adaptable to my computer, I was excited to have superfluous anti-virus software because my computer was infected with a virus only weeks before. While I feel a small better to have superfluous security, I don’t know that much about anti-virus software to equate and contrast. But I do know that at first, this will not only take up a lot of room for an older computer but will also slow the older computers down.
Possibly it works better and quicker for a newer computer that may possibly handle it but not on my computer which is considered ancient, outdated, and obsolete by now’s standards.
I was excited to try this antivirus platform, because the Norton versions that I use (360 and 2010) are (as is widely known) reminiscence hogs, and I, like everyone else, likes to free up any reminiscence possible to make available to programs that I am by.
First, on that issue, I didn’t notice much difference in the performance of my system with this antivirus. I do run a lot of reminiscence (12gB ddr3 on my desktop, 8gB ddr3 on my laptop) so perhaps if you are running on less or different reminiscence, you force find a bit of speed re-released to other programs.
Installation was simple, and had lots of features to customize to your liking. It takes awhile to do “right”, but it’s worth it if you want to make the most of your program.
I ran it for awhile, and then ran an online scan of another antivirus system to see how it was working (Trend Micro PC Cillin Free Online scan). Lo and behold, it found missed items from BitDefender. I was really disappointed, and started to do some investigate into the different agencies that monitor antivirus programs.
Both West Coast Labs and ICSA Labs certify BitDefender for virus detection and removal. West Coast offers additional checkmark certification for detection of Trojans and Spyware.
BUT BitDefender did not attain the new Checkmark Platinum certification. BitDefender hasn’t fared as well with Virus Bulletin–it failed four of the last ten Windows-based VB100 tests.
Since this last test, BitDefender rated ADVANCED+ in the most recent test of on-demand malware cleanup by [...]. It also rated ADVANCED+ with few fake positives in their latest proactive non-signature test. BitDefender rated ADVANCED in a special dynamic protection test, only topped by Norton and Kaspersky, who earned the ADVANCED+ rating.
[...] also ran a special real-world test last year, checking a dozen harvest over 60 days. BitDefender came in second-buck both for malware detection and actual blocking in this test. The top three slots in both detection and blocking were shared among Norton, Kaspersky, and PC Tools Internet Security 2010.
(Hard information from PC Magazine.)
These consequences were seen repeatedly with different testers online, and frankly, made me remove the antivirus system from my computers and reinstall my Norton antivirus systems. I saw that over and over again, BitDefender rated average or less-than-average on many issues, such as malware, scareware, and keyloggers.
One test did rate BitDefender at 100 percent on malware-rootkit based threats. Unfortunately for BitDefender, most antivirus programs rated that same 100 percent.
It did rate highly for phishing sites, and other antivirus suite did not all rate as highly.
My bottom line: This is a excellent start for BitDefender, and hopefully they will continue to improve their product. Their system configuration is fantastic. It has many custom settings for you, with gaming settings and chat encryption. Unfortunately, with its unreliable malware protection and subpar hard ratings, I reflect your systems will be better off with the more mainstream Norton or Kaspersky.
First, the excellent stuff: I lost a system to a nasty malware program that spoofed my AVG free antivirus software and fooled my nine-year-ancient into clicking the button that installed it. I had BitDefender 2010 installed on a different system, and it CAUGHT that bug and killed it dead, no problem. So, I have no problem swearing by the antivirus component of this software.
But, the system requirements listed with the quickstart guide make it clear that my older P4 system is not going to like this update. Supposedly, it will run on an 800 mHz machine, and mine is 3.2 Ghz, but I have only 2 gb of ram (that’s all the motherboard will accept), and the program itself wants a whole gb to install. That’s pretty hefty, and I’m not willing to take a performance hit on that machine, which, despite its age, is a reliable member of our home network.
I installed it on my dual core athlon 64 system instead. This is the same system that was saved by BitDefender 2010. In performing the install, which took awhile, it recommended that I delete some ancient antivirus software that I was no longer by (I must have skipped this step last year, when I installed the 2010). I followed the sanction, but the installer also deleted a file I needed to boot Windows XP. So, to end the job, I needed to go find my Windows disk and repair my Windows installation. Whole pain.
But, then, back to the excellent: Once I’d repaired my Windows installation, the BitDefender AV 2011 ran very quickly, taking only about 20% of my resources. It also comes on a rescue disk (something I may possibly have used for the other system when it died last summer). I’m really very pleased with the way the program works. I have it set to the expert interface, which is still very user friendly. When it runs in the background, it doesn’t take up any resources. Videos play smoothly. Everything works fantastic. There’s even a gamer mode, which exposes you to a bit more risk but preserves performance speed better (as noted, I do not have any speed issues on my system).
For the hold price, you get to use it on 3 pcs. I am going to install it on my Mac Mini’s windows partition.
I deducted one star because the program’s system requirements may possibly be less stringent and because installation should not require a windows repair, but I’m still a huge fan of how well the actual antivirus software works.
