spyware review

First off let me qualify my review a bit: I’m a software developer and systems architect. I have a B.S. in Computer Science and a B.A. in Mathematics. It’s safe to say I know my way around my own computer.
That said, I regret ever purchasing this software and wish I had stuck to any number of freely available antivirus solutions out there that are far less full. Rest assured, I have since uninstalled this software, but I’m still out the cash.
Because my livelihood and my consulting business depends on the performance and stability of my systems, I keep my computers – especially those I use for development – in absolute pure shape. There is never any unnecessary software installed, drives are never fragmented, and only the necessary services are running.
Unfortunately, installing Norton Antivirus 2008 has brought my productivity and efficiency to an absolute screeching halt. Immediately prior to installing the software, my system would boot in 15 – 20 seconds. It now takes 5 minutes, and no, I am not exaggerating. It boots to Windows XP in approximately 2 to 3 minutes, but the system isn’t usable – due to whatever the heck Norton is trying to do in the background – for another 2 minutes or so. I’ve tried numerous configurations of the software, such as disabling real-time scanning, etc., but to no avail.
I’m sure bounty will assume I’m trying to run this on a Pentium II 233MHz (and since installing this software, that’s what it feels like), so here are my system specs:
- Intel E6600 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo
- 2GB Corsair low-latency RAM
- eVGA 8800GTS
- Windows XP Pro
Performance never has been, and should not be, any problem whatsoever.
Norton needs to know that people don’t buy computers just so they have the privilege of by Norton Antivirus. We buy computers for personal and financial reasons. We use your software out of necessity. Our computing needs and desires do not center around YOUR software. You need to find a way to get this garbage to run without bringing very capable systems to their knees.

NAV 2008 works well after a few days of being installed on my system. I have never experienced (knock on wood) many of the problems experienced by some here, year after year. I have been a user of this since 2001 and can report no such similar problems; in fact, over the years Norton has caught several viruses before they may possibly do hurt to my system.
That being said, the one exchange made to NAV this year which I do not like at all, is the inability to choose exactly which updates you want to download, as was possible with NAV 2007. You are able to view Details of what is downloaded AFTER the download process is complete and done, but not in anticipation of then. There are times when an install of an update conflicts with something on your system, and you may need revert the drive and install it at a later time. This years’ version does not give you that option! It austerely runs through the update process and informs you when everything is downloaded. I do not like companies which treat the consumer as a child and reflect they know what is best for you and your system. I do not necessarily install Microsoft “critical” updates any just because Microsoft says to; as many (IE7 being the most notable) are not critical, but Microsoft wants you to install them. I will have to deduct one star for Symantec taking this backward step.
One day these companies will learn that consumers should be free to pick and choose precisely what goes onto their system.
I bought AntiVirus 2008 because my current system is running a Norton Product, which seems to be a huge problem switching from one vendor to another as they seem to leave remnants of the ancient software behind that can make conflicts. Immediately I was no longer able to access the internet or my email. My ISP verified that the firewall was blocking all access to the internet and gave me Symantec’s 800 number. The phone system is designed to deny any caller from speaking to an actual person. They repeatedly questioned me to go to their website to map why their product had caused so many problems, which was obviously impossible. Once I figured out to bypass this, I was told that I may possibly not receive any type of help without paying for support (although I had just paid for their product which caused the need for this support). I was told phone support would cost $9.95 which they insisted that I supply a credit card number for to go any farther. Once I paid up, they did have a technician remotely access my system and delete all remnants of this product and install a fix. This took approximately 2 hours.
I just check my credit card weigh and the technician exciting me $69.95 to repair their flawed $40.00 program.
Steer clear is my advice!
After by Norton antivirus for several years on multiple computers with no problems and the 2006 version ever since it came out, also with no problems, I thought it would be fascinating to see what the state of the art was in antivirus software so I did some investigate on the Internet. Generally, Norton gets decent reviews on most web sites but Kaspersky was often rated higher so I thought I would try it since my Norton subscription was expiring in a few days anyhow. I ordered Kaspersky version 6.0 from Amazon for $50 with a $50 rebate and I thought it doesn’t get any better than that. I uninstalled Norton and after installing Kaspersky, my computer continuously restarted. The manual tells what to do in such an event but their solution didn’t work. I called their tech support and spent two hours on the phone trying to right the problem. I downloaded and ran the Norton uninstaller, I downloaded and ran the Kaspersky uninstaller, I downloaded and installed Kaspersky version 7.0. We tried everything that the tech may possibly reflect of, same problem. I questioned him if this was a common problem and he said yes even even if the manual says it is rare. It was late in the day and I was tired from the effort so I questioned the tech if we may possibly continue the next day and he said he would call me at 8 a.m. the next morning. Well, I’ve been around awhile and I doubted that he would call, and he didn’t. After reviewing everything I had read about antivirus software and considering my experience with Norton, I downloaded and installed Norton antivirus 2008. It was simple and it’s working perfectly. I’m sure that Kaspersky is brilliant software if it works for you, but it didn’t work for me and I’m not attracted in going to all the effort it would require to try to make it work. I can count on one hand the number of times I have needed tech support for hardware or software so the fact that Norton charges for tech support is not vital to me since I’ve never needed it anyhow. I may try a different program someday, something like Nod 32 if they fix their interface, but for now I’m going to go by the ancient adage “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it”.
This renamed version of Webroot Spy Sweeper with AntiVirus to Webroot AntiVirus with AntiSpyware is an improvement over version 5. In particular, the availability of a “no superfluous charge” firewall, i.e., the Webroot Desktop Firewall, is an advance that reduces the chances of incompatibility between Webroot’s anti-malware, anti-virus, and software firewall. Fortunately, problems with an earlier version of the firewall on my system, where the firewall showed the message that it had encountered a problem and was end itself down seems to have been eliminated in later updates. If a “free” firewall is an vital significance, potential buyers should check with Webroot to confirm continued availability of this product with Weboot Antivirus. A recent discussion with Webroot’s on-line support team mentioned that in the prospect this firewall may only be provided to purchasers of Webroot Internet Security Essentials and not purchasers of the product reviewed here.
An email problem that occurred with earlier releases of Spysweeper has now reappeared with this version, at least on my Outlook-64 bit system (those with different systems may have other experience). As of the date of this review, Webroot AntiVirus with AntiSpyware has not permitted the download of email if the Webroot email buffer is on. The problem is present both with Windows Mail and Mozilla Thunderbird. Rotary off the email buffer clears the problem, but it means the email buffer cannot be used, and thus does not provide email protection.
Spysweeper continues to have other implementation deficiencies. Although it specifies the number of cookies it finds, unless it determines a cookie is a problem, e.g., a tracking cookie, it provides no further information. A clearly better deal with would be for Spysweeper to list all cookies it finds with their location and allow users to choose which, if any, cookies to keep. But, Spysweeper has not advanced in this area from their previous versions.
Some additional disappointment with Spysweeper relates to the company’s intrusive sales “nags” after hold. For example, when you select “Check for Updates” manually from the Spysweeper “Home” page, your browser is opened and you are taken to one of the company’s web pages (nag screens) — even if your product is up-to-date. There you’ll find the option to “Renew Your Subscription Early and Save $10 for another year of protection”, although the price for the software even with this early hold discount is higher than Amazon’s fixed price. Spysweeper should certainly consider removing this “feature” in the near prospect.
When I called technical support, I was placed on hold for approximately 20 minutes. During this time the call was frequently punctuated by recorded messages offering me quicker support access for a flat fee starting at $29.95, or $99.95 for help with virus removal. Webroot’s bundled technical support team appears understaffed. After a 20 minute wait for the first level of technical support, I was again place on hold, for over an hour, for the next level of support. But, when the appropriate technical support level was reached, the technician was friendly, courteous, and knowledgeable and quickly solved my problem.
During a Spysweeper installation, Spysweeper may not be the only software you will be installing. The defaulting during the Spysweeper installation process is to also install the “Question Toolbar” in your browser without requiring your point praise. If you are not alert this will be done involuntarily. Clearly an “op-in” for a possibly undesired feature would be more appropriate than Webroot’s “op-out” requirement. As the Question toolbar is available for free download from Question, the current defaulting installation is not a service to Webroot customers. If you do not want the Question toolbar added to your browser, carefully check your options as you install Spysweeper.
From a user’s perspective, the software has not changed momentously. The software interface is essentially identical to earlier versions. Full sweeps are still relatively long, even on a quad core system with four gigabytes of RAM. Of course, it’s not clear if the relatively long sweep times are due to thoroughness or to inefficient algorithm designs. Quicker sweeps can be achieved by the “quick sweep” option. But, if you’re going to check you system for malware, it seems a “full sweep” is most appropriate.
No anti-malware program can detect or buffer against all malware. As two example: Rootkits were known about for some time before effectual means were developed to detect, eliminate, and buffer against them. Also, with every new malware release, systems are vulnerable in anticipation of the malware is detected. Even then, each software company takes differing times to update and release fixes after learning about the new threat. Thus, its a excellent thought to use more than one anti-malware program and, if possible, have them update involuntarily. In terms of prevention/detection, in the years I’ve been by Spyweeper, I’ve only found two occasions where malware made it through their shields, a significant achievement.
Conclusion: . Spysweeper’s anti-malware capabilities appear reasonably competent. While it has some insignificant nuisances, as described above, the serious email problem, at least on my system, and the long support hold times (unless a consumer pays an additional fee) need improvement if this product is to deserve a top rating.
I have been by the Spysweeper part of this program for many years. I bought this to product to update my antivirus software and have software that had both antivirus and antispyware together. The antispyware sheilds do a very excellent job of catching spyware before they enter your computer.
I have been on ‘subscription treadmill’ with Spysweeper, which has been highly rated in the past.
By this with free download of MalwareBytes seems to do a excellent job of blocking and clearing all the gremlins.
I had a very terrible virus a few months ago, and I was resigned to re-format the drive. I had heard of the MalwareByte free program, and chose to try it in desperation. It worked very well, identifying and removing the bug. The free version doesn’t appear to be RAM-resident. You call it up on demand, update, and run it. Very frequent updates, means there are many working on bug removal. I don’t know if the paid version is any different, but I highly recommend the Malware Bytes program. I will hold it, since I reflect those programmers are certainly worth the community’s support. (I am NOT associated with this company).
I will admit I use a same type previous bought Webroot product on a computer running Windows XP, but this time when I bought SpySweeper with Anivirus to run on Windows Outlook Ultimate it did not do the job. I may possibly not scan individual folders, or files. Every time I downloaded new software I had to do a whole disk scan; so, I bought Norton Antivirus which is working very well with Outlook Ultimate. This is not to say that Symantec is with out problems on certain operating systems at times.
There is not much more to add to technical comments already given. But, I wanted to add my personal view that this product works well and gives me the peace of mind that my computer is protected while on the internet. This product is very economical and covers a wide base of protection. I said goodbye to the high cost of the huge “N” product. I had NO PROBLEMS during installation. All updates are done in the background as needed with no discernable slowing in computing. I have had it installed for 4 months now and everything is as advertized. Highly recommended.
