I want to find information about computer recycling. One piece I can not find reliable info on is what percent of computers recycled/donated are able to be refurbished and resold (within the US). The numbers I have found are <2%, 10% and 50%.

i’d guess that 50% or more can be salvaged.
but, it’s extremely hard to find an operating system that will run very well (ie not be slower than a nematode) on older, slower, machines.

i would reflect that there should be a market for an operating system that has less function, and uses less cpu cycles.
unfortunately, such a system may well not be profitable.
a) because people will austerely copy it and not pay, or
b) because people will not find the lack of much of the current function acceptable.

Is QVC, Sam’s Club and/or Rent-to-Own, the best place to buy brand computer systems? ¶I want to get a laptop for home but dread a laptop couldn’t survive an active household of teenager’s, a dog, being carried around, dropped, eating on, spilled on, etc.
¶Which brand laptop and desktop computer is not only reasonably priced, but is physically tough, able to possibly withstand a teenager’s multiple uses, games, videos, email, downloads?
¶Would a REBUILT & updated laptop and desktop be just as excellent as a new system?
¶How do I determine monitor size if a desktop?

repairing an external hard drive

.

I have an external hard drive, the on/off button is broken. I called to see how much it would be to repair it but the guy said it would be cheaper to buy a new one. Is this right? Also, how do I crack the case to get the hard drive out? Thanks in advance.

Answer by Kristjan d
He is right and incorrect. You can’t fix the case with OEM parts (Original Equipment) it would be the cost of a new unit. The drive should (probably) still be excellent. Most of the time there are small screws typically hidden under the stickers or the small rubber feet (most likely). If you don’t see them the thing just snaps together (start at the corners)although I have never seen this config. Excellent luck!
