Suppose I have a tape which I can use for backup and I have backed up my data on to the tape drive. How long can I keep the data safe unattended?

Best answer:

Answer by John N
Tapes are not a safe way to store backup’s if they are not verified. The only real way to verify is to do a restore. By unattended I mean that you don’t want to verify? To truely be safe you need the backup in a different location than your primary. If they are together and their is theft, fire, flood, lightning, etc the same location is VERY RISKY.

Go with an online service that verifies their backups each time they are done.

Can I trust an online backup service?

.

On one hand, I’ll make myself safer by providing insurance against a hard drive crash or other calamity. On the other hand, I’ll be exposing myself to any devious person that happens to gain access to my files on the backup service’s servers. That may possibly be any employee of the service. There’s the risk of identity theft or other crime. Any thoughts on this to help me choose whether to use an online service or not?

Online back up services are nearly better then backup hard drives that you hold at your home. You dont need to agonize about any of your info being hurt in a flood or fire and most of the information is backed up on you online backup company’s servers 2+ times to make sure it is safe.

Everything I click on I get this warning..not sure what it is or how it got here, but it is annoying!!

Here’s some info on it:

Description
This signature detects the adware Alexa’s user information tracking activity.
Additional Information
Once installed, Alexa toolbar keeps track of user activity such as Web pages visited, etc.

Adware:
Programs that facilitate delivery of advertising make pleased to the user through their own window, or by utilizing another program’s interface. In some cases, these programs may gather information from the user’s computer, including information related to Internet browser treatment or other computing habits, and relay this information back to a remote computer or other location in cyberspace.

Adware can be downloaded from Web sites (typically in shareware or freeware), email messages, and instant messengers. Additionally, a user may unknowingly receive and/or trigger adware by accepting an End User License Agreement from a software program associated to the adware, or from visiting a Web site that downloads the adware with or without an End User License Agreement.

How do I get rid of it?!?!?!?!?! Thanks

Someone, or something, installed this program on your computer, it has a toolbar that is supposed to be helpful. It is probably more helpful to them than it is to you.

This program has been around for reasonably a long time. It can be considered spyware. The real problem is that it force be compromised by crimeware or malware and you would never know it. That’s why Norton warns you about it.

The Wikipedia site says Alexa is owned by Amazon.com and has contracts with Google. Hmm hmm and hmm.

Gathering information…

From the Alexa website:

If you want to remove the Alexa program, click on this link:

http://www.alexa.com/site/help/?index=37

They basically tell you to go to the Add/Remove programs within Control Panel on your computer.

From Symantec:
If you want to remove the Alexa program, click on this link:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/trackware.alexa.html

It will redirect to another document within the Symantec website. There is a tab “Removal” in that document, click on it and you will have your instructions.

You will have to print the instructions out for they are long and complicated.
