I had a system restore performed on my PC recently as it was infected with a virus. I re-installed Norton 360, which I had previously, with the back-up function and was tempted to try and see if any of my lost files were backed up involuntarily by Norton. I’m just worried about fortuitously restoring the viral file that was removed. Does Norton allow you to select files, and is this safe enough? Is there any chance that Norton would have backed up my work involuntarily or would I have had to have set this up beforehand?

Norton backup needs to be set up first. So if you never did that, then it did not back up anything. Depending on how you set it up, and what you told it to back up. It’s only for backing up some things. It does not do a full image back up. I like programs that do a full image back up. That way if you get infected, you can just select a back up that you did before you where infected. This back up will not be infected. You should be able to look on your hard drive for the norton back up folder and see what’s in there.
