It is whole white out and only dark bars appear in the unsociable background. Do I need to replace the screen, bulb, inverter or what? Laptop functions well otherwise and I have it ported to a LCD screen so I can still use it.
Laptop serves my purposes well and would rather not replace it, willing to spend a bit of money to fix.
Suggestions?

I sounds like the screen is cracked, contact the suppot and say what you are asking, then say i reflect it is cracked.
I’d fix it my self but then screen would cost 100$ or more and labour 20$ plus i dont reflect you want to send it away
I reflect it would be best to question your question in the HP forums at http://www.hp-forums.com. You can question pros and also interact with other HP users to answer and question related questions. I go there for problems with my machine all the time and get the answer pretty quickly.
