water on my boyfriend’s sister’s laptop keyboard about 2 weeks ago & in the last couple of days it is now hard for them to type. Do they have to take it to repair shop to get it fixed? Do they have to buy new laptop? The laptop was bought in 2002. Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give to me.

It is more than likely time for a new laptop. There’s a slim chance that the keyboard and only the keyboard is faulty, in which case replacing the whole keyboard would do the trick. You’d have to find and hold the keyboard yourself to replace it without going to a repair shop.

Here’s the problem with spilling “a small” on a laptop: the motherboard is right under the keyboard. When that goes, repairs are more expensive than a new laptop.

With a 2002 laptop, your choice is a no-brainer. Since the life cycles of laptops tend to be 3-5 years, dumping money into a six year ancient laptop doesn’t make sense, even if it’s just the keyboard–which is dodgy.

The next time you spill something on a laptop, or any electronic device, rip the AC adapter and battery out of it as quick as you can go. The amalgamation of water and electricity is lethal for gadgets, and quick action can sometimes prevent shorted circuitry. In about three days, it’s usually safe to power them back up and see how much hurt has been done.
