Virus/adware question

I have picked up a virus/adware somewhere and cannot seem to get rid of it. I have updated and used Microsoft Defender, SpyBot S&D, Windows OneCare, and my Symantec anti-vius and still no luck.

Problem:

When I use the search engine from Yahoo home page it post results, but the first three clicks renders ad pages: ebay, monster, etc? After the third click I can find the page I need. On Google a similar issue, but different sites. Now when I chose MSN Search from the address bar it took me there and the search was fine. So, I changed my default home page to MSN it had the same problems as Yahoo. So, it seems the virus has attached itself to my default web browser?

When I type a search and hover over the Yahoo web search button…I see the following web address at the bottom of IE:
r/sx/*-http://search.yahoo.com/search

A ghost page??

When I check the control panel>Internet options It shows www.yahoo.com

On Google I get a /search at the bottom of the page.

Firefox is unaffected and I have been using it the last few days.

Please advise on how to fix this problem…is there better software to root out the problem?

If not is there a tutorial to help me clean the issue?

It is the same one every time. It is adware:win32/hotbar. Microsoft security essentials will remove it and then it will be back in a day or two. My email is mblessedmother@gmail.com, if you need more info about it to know.
Is it possible that it is not actually being removed, but simply tricking the computer into thinking it was removed?
Sandy I went to download it, but I got a warning saying that this type of file can harm my computer.
Also if my computer is infected, is it possible that I could send someone else the virus through email? Please respond ASAP, so I know if I should avoid emailing till this is resolved. Actually I am using google chrome web browser. I prefer it over firefox, but if if firefox is safer then I can switch. Is it safer?

Best answer:

Answer by sandy
use superantispyware it will take it out with no problem its very good and free get at filehippo.com.— it is very safe filehippo is a safe site and no viruses hope this helps.

I researched that these little adds that pop up on my computer in random places are called adware. I really want to know if there is anything that I can do about this to get them off of my computer. I already have Norton 360 and Malwarebytes on my computer to help. This does nothing for adware though. PLEASE HELP!!!. I would be SOOO eternally grateful!

Answer by x_perished_x
for windows xp, get yourself pest patrol. malwarebytes should be able to get rid of it but norton is probably blocking it. adware will always keep returning since most of them are part of webpages. so unless you plan on giving up websurfing, there will always be some kind of adware on your system. you could always set malwarebytes to be active in the background if you have the retail version.
