It says I could restore windows with the disk. But will the laptop actually work again?

I set down a magnet on my laptop(pretty strong), I rubbed it on it a little bit actually because I forgot magnets could ruin hard drives, and when I came back there was a blue screen saying my computer was damaged, and now it says it cant start because it can’t find an important file. I don’t have a recovery disk, but I can get one.

Best answer:

So my mac was bugging me to do the time machine thing every time I plugged in my external drive so today I finally decided to set it up, so I approved that that’s what I wanted to use for my time machine and what not. But now when I open it up, all my previous files from weeks and months ago are not there. I’d like to know if I screwed up big time or if I can recover them from my external hard drive somehow.

Best answer:

Answer by Nana
You will need to recover the data using something like asoftech data recovery.

http://www.bing.com/search?q=asoftech+data+recovery

I’ve had to use it many times in the past but in this case you need to take out the hard drive from mac and put it into a Windows computer as an external drive or slave drive and run the software from there. It will rebuild the drive and hopefully recover the files.
Good luck.

How can I restore factory settings on Compaq Presario Laptop when I cannot access the the Recovery Drive. My computer is infected with a google redirect virus when I attempted to restore factory settings through system recovery F11 it just hangs. I don’t know if a virus is blocking my ability to access the Recovery drive or its something else. I don’t have a separate restoration CD. Any help or advice would be appreciated?

Best answer:

Answer by Simply RED
The F11 is the only way you can restore the computer to factory defaults. If that doesn’t work anymore then it’s just as good as deleted. Your only option is to back up your data if you haven’t yet and reinstall a fresh copy of Windows 7. You will need to buy a set of Recovery Discs from Compaq/HP.

If you need further assistance, turn on the email capability on your profile and send me the following details:
1. Windows 7 edition and version.
2. Do you have your product key on a sticker under the computer?
3. Do you have another computer that you can use to download files and burn to a disc or copy to a USB flash drive?
4. Do you know how to set up your BIOS to boot from a USB flash drive or DVD?
5. Do you know how to download and install drivers from Compaq/HP?

It is a Western Digital 500 GB external hard drive. It recently entered the stage where it is no longer recognized by my (or others’) computers.

I would like to know the estimated price for repair and just repair, data recovery is not necessary. Also if there are any suggestions on how to repair it myself, that would be greatly appreciated.

I believe it has something to do with the drive not spinning or some other common problem.

Best answer:

Answer by I am right
If you don’t need the data, then just buy a new hard drive. It would be cheaper than trying to get it repaired. If you do need the data and think repairing the drive will allow you to save the data, the chances of that are slim to none. Data recovery is not cheap. Most places I’ve checked charge from ,000 and up.

I recently had a power out, and when I tried to start my PC back up it does not detect any boot media. I threw in my Windows 7 (I have Win7 x64 Home Premium installed) disk and tried doing an auto recovery, and that didn’t help. I cannot run checkdisk because I have a “… RAW filesystem….”

My OS disk is a RAID 0 array of 2x Corsair SSDs, and I have a RAID 0 array or 2x WD Caviars for data. My BIOS still detects all drives, and recognizes the RAID arrays, but I cannot boot and every solution I have found on the internet stops at “RAW filesystem”. I downloaded TestDisk, which needs to be run from Windows. I tried saving it to a USB drive, navigating to the drive from the Windows Recovery CMD, and running testdisk_win. This was unsuccessful, something about “…memory in 0xFFFFFF”. I’m pretty frustrated here. Because these are software RAID arrays I don’t want to take them out of the PC, and that wouldn’t help anyway because I’m pretty sure I can’t just connect them to my laptop as the RAID wouldn’t be recognized.

Please, does anyone have a surefire list of things I can try? I’d be just ecstatic if someone has recovered from a RAW file system on their OS drive without removing the drive, and without losing any data/installed programs. (BTW, I’m going to try to get ahold of a bootable copy of windows on a USB stick tomorrow, and booting to it on the PC and running TestDisk from there – any tips here would be greatly appreciated as well)
Yes, thanks for that, I actually have a UPS but my PC wasn’t plugged into it last night when the power went off. I know, a UPS doesn’t help if I don’t use it, but that’s what happened and I’m not going to get into details on why my PC isn’t safely in my office on my UPS in the home I no longer have. But thanks for the tip on the boot utility, I’ll take a look at it, as well as the iCare (heard good things about iCare already). I’d give you a thumbs up if I could, but I can’t rate answers yet I guess!

Your description of the problem creates more questions! I got a headache just reading through it! If this was a business the administrator would have been fired!”

How exactly is this a crazy setup? I built this personal computer for performance, and while I’d like to upgrade soon to either a safe RAID 10 or go hardware for a decent RAID 5, neither of these would have helped with the power-loss causing a

Answer by UrxmlF
Try SuperGrub boot utility.

http://www.supergrubdisk.org/

Sounds like your computer was powered on while the power was failing. Do you not have an UPS installed on this computer? If not, you are playing with fire. It is only a matter of time before it frys completely. Dirty power and not enough power are bigger issues that surges today and only an UPS can protect your system.

You must have lost your boot sector data / partition table info / file system info which is written in a special area of the disk.

You can run a repair on it, probably from a utility boot cd but there is a chance of losing everything. You probably should start with a bootable Linux cd that mounts an NTFS partition as READ ONLY and then attempt to mount and copy your data off that computer before you do anything else.

Check this software below:
