Best answer:

Answer by tmorris
Inks are water based and one type puts a tiny amount of heat in a chamber, heats it and the water expands expelling the ink.

Another (used by Epson) uses a Piezo element that vibrates very fast when controlled by a driver chip, there is a small chamber against the element and when ink is in the chamber and the element vibrates it forces the droplet out of the head.

So there is the heat method and the vibration method.

I have noticed on color laser printers like the HP4700 it does not have a waste toner collection box. However on newer HP color laser printers they have this waste toner box that needs to be replaced after a certain amount of time. Is this a gimmick from the printer manufacturers or is the technology different in the way it distributes toner on the page?

Best answer:

Answer by Denver Al
The technology is different in how the printers treat waste toner & store it away. Some have a separate drum (and toner cartridge) that the toner image is placed on & needs to be cleaned & the waste toner is collected in a collection container. Other lasers use a toner cartridge with the drum built-in & collects the waste toner in it’s own cartridge & is disposed of when the toner/drum cartridge is replaced.
