I set down a magnet on my laptop(pretty strong), I rubbed it on it a little bit actually because I forgot magnets could ruin hard drives, and when I came back there was a blue screen saying my computer was damaged, and now it says it cant start because it can’t find an important file. I don’t have a recovery disk, but I can get one.

I then had to recover my files from the sixth dimension of space-time, and I got a new external drive and am copying them on there as we speak.

Now my question is concerning the recovery I did:

It did something weird and in disk management it was saying I had two hard drives of the same size as the one in my laptop, which is obviously bogus. I want to do another recovery after I’m finished backing up my barely saved files.

Can I format my hd before doing the recovery to make sure everything is wiped clean? Or do I have to just startup with the recovery disk and hope it does it right this time?

I would really like to wipe the hd before doing the recovery if possible?

If you’re thinking about wiping your disk then doing file recoveries, don’t. Most probably you won’t get your files back. If you’re thinking about wiping your disk then doing system recovery, well, don’t. It’s pointless to do system recovery when your system is already wiped off. Is that what you meant?

Well it sounds like one of the cds is just for your drivers. Normally recovery cds are one or 2 cds. The first would be the operating system and the second would be drivers and applications. Sometimes they are all together in one as well.

For example i just purchased a recent cd from http://www.newrecoverydisk.com and it was 2 cds. The first one was the oem cd for my windows 7 operating system. After i installed that the directions that came with it tells me to put in the second cd. The second cd was all the apps and drivers that came with my computer. I didn’t really want to install the other bloatware that came with my computer so i just used the default windows 7 drivers. However it seemed to have fixed my problem.

Ever since then, which has been two months now, I have been downloading all these Image Recovery programs, I have downloaded free ones and paid for some. I have read all these blogs about card recovery programs working, but they do not for me. I am desperate to get these pictures back. I want to have these pictures so badly, I have cried over them. Does anyone know anywhere I can send my card and get the images recovered or any way to bring them back? Your help is appreciated.

If the image recovery programs don’t work your memory card must be broken, like actually physically damaged inside. You are SOL.
