I recently acquired a Dell Poweredge 1750 IMU quad xeon server from on of my buddies, and I keep running into problems with it. I downloaded an OS from http://software.opensuse.org/121/en and burned it to a disk, but every time I turn on the server, it checks the hard drive, test the processors, spns up devices, says the MBT boot ROM is successfully installed, then says “PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable” It then says its exiting Broadcom PXE ROM and says to strike F1 to reboot or F2 to enter setup utility.
I want to use this to host a dedicated server for Minecraft, but I honestly have no idea what I’m doing with the thing, or what I’m doing wrong. How do I make this work?

Best answer:

Answer by mr. c
this simply means the server is trying to boot from its Ethernet (Internet cable) connection

start up the server & when the Power-On Self Test is nearly over press the F12 key to access the boot menu
(the screen should display that option around that time in the top right corner)

once in the boot-menu, use the arrow keys to select CD (DVD?) Rom and hit enter to boot from that

as an extra step, you may want to press F2 first & boot into the BIOS menu
there you can check (in the boot sub-menu) whether the boot order is something like
- primary hard disk
- CD-Rom

most likely, currently, the Ethernet card is 1st; hit the – key on the num pad to move it down

once those changes are done, hit the ESC key & choose “Save and reboot” and hit F12 when the server restarts

I live in Perth, does this mean that hosting would give bad ping to people who hire a server from America/other countries?

Thanks for any info!

Best answer:

Answer by Tony
I would not recommend it simply because it will be hard to compete with the thousands other servers, with one exception, if you have friends and family or able to get connection to convince people to move to yours, you will make some good profit.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/DELL-POWEREDGE-1950-2X-XEON-5150-DUAL-CORE-CPUS-4GB-MEM-1x-73GB-10K-SAS-HDD-/200709044139?pt=COMP_EN_Servers&hash=item2ebb30f7ab

Best answer:

Answer by Nolly
That is an entry level rack server that should be able to be used rackless.

However, you need to be careful because rack servers are designed for the cooling to be most efficient on a rack. You probably want to put a little pedestal at each corner so it is up off the ground and air can flow underneath. If it is near the floor, you will also want to check it for dust a spray it out with canned air every couple of weeks. Also if you live in a hot climate you will want to watch the temperatures of the system and point a house fan at it if it gets too hot.

Be warned most servers are significantly louder than what you are used to in a desktop computer. Just saying in case you are buying this for your home and were thinking about putting it in a bedroom or something.

Ive been having an issue with backing up a server to remote sites at our company through WAN. I setup a backup locally and that one works perfectly fine.
The backups go to a 1TB NAS and I use Symantec Backup Exec for software. When I setup a job to go to our remote site, it goes to another NAS on our domain. I can see and create a job to the NAS and it does transfer information however it crawls. A typical backup here will take 3 hours and remote, will take 36 hours. We upgraded our internet speed and updated our routers to use the suggested by our IT consultants. I am not very experienced in this but I am looking for as much info as possible as im starting to hit dead ends. The net cards are good too. I dont understand why this doesnt work at a remote site within our network but it will send data to a “cloud” location setup by a third party company.

Best answer:

Answer by johntrottier
The bottleneck is most likely at a router outside of your control. The only way you can achieve the rates you are looking for is to ease dedicated lines and control the entire transmission path. As long as you try to use the Internet as your path, you are at the mercy of the slowest connection in the system

Sorry

The default setting is “SecureLogon”. Below are the various settings:

This example allows Basic authentication on an unsecured port if you won’t be using TLS encryption.

If you plan on not using TLS, I always recommend using PlainTextAuthentication which allows users to send the password over the internet without using TLS. This however does require your users configuring “Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA)” under Outlook.

Today I had an issue installing Exchange 2010 with SP1 in a new Active Directory forest. The installation was failing during installation of the Hub Transport role. The following error was experienced:

Hub Transport Role
Failed

Error:
The following error was generated when “$error.Clear();
Add-DelegatedGroupsToLocalAdminGroup -DomainController

$RoleDomainController

” was run: “Failed to read directory object with distinguished name TST-DC2-EXC-1-4.”.

Failed to read directory object with distinguished name TST-DC2-EXC-1-4.

After looking at the error “Failed to read directory object with distinguished name” I first checked the SPN for the computer object TST-DC2-EXC-1-4. This checked out fine.

I then removed the computer TST-DC2-EXC-1-4 from the Active Directory domain, deleted the computer object then rejoined it. When rejoining the domain I experienced the following error:

Changing the Primary Domain DNS name of this computer to “” failed. The name will retain “tsthosting.local”. The error was:

This specified server cannot perform the requested operation.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 397px; height: 174px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eXk1A31T4Ro/T3q1Zj9k7nI/AAAAAAAAB1Q/DhHfQA-4E8k/s400/error2.PNG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5727089326909877874" />

I removed the PC from the domain setting it back to workgroup. Before joining it to the domain again I manually set the primary DNS suffix for the computer account by clicking More in the domain settings window.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 323px; height: 381px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ztcr4Kw9xHY/T3q2PmYVclI/AAAAAAAAB1c/1PqB3owpLoI/s400/step1.PNG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5727090255271916114" />

I then unticked change primary DNS suffix when domain membership changes and manually typed in my domains DNS suffix.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 395px; height: 225px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-eCeUlVuftRY/T3q2b84CUmI/AAAAAAAAB1o/5ikzF6-GJvE/s400/step2.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5727090467468890722" />

This resolved my problem allowing my setup to complete successfully.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 348px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PzA6X7BCnZU/T3q3AjqhFwI/AAAAAAAAB10/MwHvwZ2HX4U/s400/setupcomplete.PNG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5727091096356460290" />

While this procedure fixed the issue, it is not the root cause. I did not have enough time to diagnose and determine the root cause.

Answer by coolevil
A dedicated server is a single computer in a network reserved for serving the needs of the network..Linux and Windows are two different types of operating systems. Linux is the most popular operating system for web servers. Since Linux-based hosting is more popular, it has more of the features web designers expect. So unless you have websites which need specific Windows applications, Linux is the preferred choice
