Answer by Colanth
Restart Windows. Keep pressing F8 while the computer starts, until you get to a black page with a white menu that has Safe Mode as one of the choices.

Select Safe Mode with Networking.

Download http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php and run it. When it finishes running, restart the computer and let it start normally, no F8.

Now download http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and run it. (It’ll slow your computer a bit for a day or two, as it checks every file for viruses.) Leave it running to keep protecting you.

You’re done and protected.

Answer by DMZ
the backup file is the file which will be restored if a problem happens. You can do a backup of a word document so if you lost that document you can restore it.

It is also important to keep your backup data up to date so if you need to restore the backup everything is there and you did not lose any important data or update on one or more files.

Best answer:

Answer by Fieda
Remove the old hard drive and put it into an enclosure.Plug it into new computer as a slave. Then you can copy your files on it.
If it shows up in ‘my computer’ as a drive letter(like E: drive) but you can’t access it,you can recover data from hard drive with data recovery program.Asoftech data recovery is a professional data recovery program that can recover data after deeply scanning your hard drive to look for lost data due to drives crash, physical damage, system sabotage, virus attack etc.You can get it here:

Is there something else out there? Anything anyone would recommend for a DIY security system?

Best answer:

Answer by Smokey da Bear
Go to Amazon.com, type in DIY security system to see what they have, and then google DIY security system reviews. These are wireless systems that DO NOT have central station monitoring unless you want it. The only problem with a dog is that even if you set motion sensors where Rover won’t trip them, he will find a way to do so. That will activate the siren or horn and your neighbors will love that. Maybe just get a system that protects the doors and windows with contacts and no motion sensors. Their prices start at 0

The local area network (LAN) for the College of Business computing system at a large university is temporarily shut down for repairs. Previous shutdowns have been due to hardware failure, software failure, or power failure. Maintenance engineers have determined that the probabilities of hardware, software, and power problems are .01,.05, and .02, respectively. They have also determined that if the system experiences hardware problems, it shuts down 73% of the time. Similarly, if software problems occur, the system shuts down 12% of the time; and, if power failures occur, the system shuts down 88% of the time. What is the probability that the current shutdown of the LAN is due to hardware failure? software? power failure?

Note: let F1 = hardware failure, F2 = software failure, F3 = power failure and
S = system shut down
Given: P(F1) = 0.01, P(F2) = 0.05, P(F3) = 0.02, P(S|F1) = 0.73, P(S|F2) = 0.12, P(S|F3) = 0.88
Hint: You are asked for P(Fi|S), for i = 1,2,3. To get those, you must first find P(S)

My prof likes to be technical, so use formulas/notation please! Thanks.
Open to other methods too, not only to adding the sum of the probabilities!

Best answer:

Answer by Clive G
P(S) = sum[P(Fi)*P(Si|Fi)] = 0.01*0.73 + 0.05*0.12 + 0.02*0.88 = 0.0309

P(F1|S) = P(F1 and S)/P(S) = 0.01*0.73/0.0309 = 0.2362
P(F2|S) = P(F2 and S)/P(S) = 0.05*0.12/0.0309 = 0.1942
P(F3|S) = P(F3 and S)/P(S) = 0.02*0.88/0.0309 = 0.5696

Answer by cdabexx
Do this instead. By deleting your user accounts everything will stay they same but all your stuff will be gone. Click start or windows icon at lower left of screen, then control panel, then user accounts. Create yourself a new user account with full adminstrator rights then delete all other user accounts, poof everything is gone since your pc was new, your partitions should be fine.
