   It does not sound like you have a virus, it sounds like you have a rogue program that is technically called “malware”. The reason your antivirus does not detect this program is because it really is not a virus. It is a fixed program just like any other, the distress is that it hides itself and does not show up in the add/remove program list so it is very hard to get rid of.

   This program shows up as many different names, for some it is called “Win XP Antivirus 2008” for others it is called “CoreGuard” and for some it is called “Power Antivirus 2009”. No matter the name, they all do the same thing, they send pop-ups to your desktop and tell you that your computer is infected and the only way to fix it is to go to their website and buy their software. Sadly, many people do go to their website and buy it, only to find that their software does nothing, the pop-ups continue to happen. Worse yet, the terrible guys now have your credit card info and can try to steal your identity.

   The simplest way to remove this kind of malware is with a FREE program called Malwarebytes. Once you install it, run a scan or two and you should be all cleaned out. Malwarebytes is NOT an antivirus program. It is designed to work WITH your antivirus and plug the holes that your antivirus is missing. Malwarebytes and other FREE antivirus programs can be downloaded from the website not more than

   oh wow – yeah… that’s “one of them!”

   you got hit!

   but not to agonize, i deal with this nearly every day

   follow these instructions to clear off any viruses you have

   [[FIRST...]] you’re already having a terrible day – make life as simple on yourself as possible…

   [[PRINT THIS PAGE OUT]] – you’ll be rotary your computer on and off
   (also… i provide some links with directinos – you should print those out too)

   if you haven’t already, you’ll need to download a program called “malwarebytes anti-malware” (MBAM for small!)

   (or use the “filehippo” link if they’re blocking you from getting to the MBAM website – yes! they do that!!)

   install MBAM, update it (third tab from left – make *sure* the date is “now’s” date when its done – keep updating it in anticipation of you get “todays” date!)
   then, run the quick scan (first tab on the left)

   follow the directions from there – it will tell you the “scan is complete” – then select “show consequences” – then “remove selected”

   it will prompt you to restart after that – do it

   in case you’ve got a *really* sticky circumstances, and this virus is blocking your attempts to follow my directions…

   turn off something called “system restore” – the terrible guys will use that to RE-INFECT your computer, even if you were able to successfully remove the virus!!
   (if you are by Outlook, you’ll have to turn off UAC first)

   next, you’ll need to reboot your computer in to “safe mode with networking” mode

   - reboot your comptuer
   - once you see that it has fully shut down, and then started coming back up again, start tapping the F8 key
   - you’ll see what’s called the “boot options menu” – a black screen with a lot of white text
   - cursor to “safe mode with networking” and hit enter (and enter again at the next screen)

   again, attempt to download MBAM (see links not more than)

   install, update, and run a “quick scan”

   [[AND *THAT* DIDN'T EVEN WORK!! NOW WHAT??]]

   if its really really REALLY terrible…

   well, you may need to literally take the HD out of your computer, place it into another computer (“slaving” your HD to another computer), run MBAM against your infected HD (you would have to select “full scan” this time, MBAM will then permit you to select your HD from a list – note: the “full scan” will take longer, but you have no choice at this top)

   this method will will WILL work, but… requires some technical expertise

   viruses this terrible give even seasoned techs a run for their money and “sometimes” its actaully simpler to save all your data and just repartition/reformat your HD and reinstall your operating system (you have your original CDs right? RIGHT??)

   any you don’t want to (or can’t!) transplant your HD to another computer – or even after that, you’re still stuck

   basically, you may have to call in a computer guy

   do a search on “computer repair” (place your city in the search terms too) and pick someone with excellent credentials

   here’s what it means to you…

   besides all the time you’ve already place in to this headache, this is what you have to look forward to

   if you take your computer in, you’ll pay $250-$350 to get this job done
   if someone comes to your place, it’ll be $200-$300
   best buy/geek squad will charge you $200/hr – and take 4-6 days to get to you

   also.. you may possibly look on http://maps.google.com or http://local.yahoo.com – pick a company that has reviews from previous customers
   another helpful site (with reviews) is http://www.kudzu.com

   call a few of these companies, get a feel for each one, pick one you feel comfortable with

   let us know how it works out!
