In my opinion…

Security is best in layers. If only perimeter alarms – windows and doors – are installed, then that is only a single layer. Better to add external motion sensors to turn on lights to prevent the break-in… and internal motion sensors to provide the alert in case the perimeter is breached – at this top, there would be three layers. Add video surveillance and connect that system to video monitors located in useful places, and a fourth layer is added.

Security is only as excellent as the buck common denominator:

If the power goes out, how is the security system supposed to run? How long of a battery back up time is needed?

Do you need to carry a “panic button”? Is the system designed for that?

Security is only as excellent as the humans running it. If the system is not armed because someone forgot to turn it on, then the security system is pretty a waste of time. If the system is simple to turn off, then that can cause a security breach honestly easily.

What happens when the security system is tripped and the alert sounds. If there is no response, that is as excellent as not having a security system. If there are lots of fake alarms, then there is small value there, too – and in some areas, Law Enforcement may start charging you for fake alarms or your neighbors force complain about unsettling the peace…

Check with the Better Business Bureau or the local Chamber of Buying – or even the Law Enforcement agency serving your area – for security system suggestions and recommendations.

Excellent luck.
