try going to dslreports.com and take the tweak test. It will give you a small program called Dr tcp, and tell you how to tweak your tcp/ip settings to get most speed. Your tcp/ip settings are by defaulting set for a dial up modem.

Also, consider buying your computer some more Reminiscence or RAM. It will make nearly everything seem quicker. I would reccomend anywhere from 512MB to 1GB.
