I want to make a shorter name for an attention to be used when you are running programs from the “run” box. As an example, if I want to run Micorsoft Office Word, I want to be able to type in “wrd” or something like that. I have searched it up on Google but I don’t know what keywords to use and the ones I have tried were a waste of time. I have done this before but can’t remember what values you need to exchange.

Hi, Heather. Do you really need to mess around with the registry? I prefer a safer method which I just thought up, or a better method I found doing a WWW search for the following words:
outlook run shortcut alias
Obviously, I happen to be at a Outlook PC, so substitute your operating system name and terminology.
The method I thought of is to add a shortcut to the start menu with the small name. (right click start button – Explore all users – File- new-folder-”Bone idle Heather’s Shortcuts”) – then make or paste a MS Word shortcut into that folder, renamed “wrd”. So when you’re at the run thing on Outlook’s Start menu, it will appear when you type in “wrd”
Unfortunately, the start menu doesn’t seem to be in the search path for Win-R (Run dialogue box), so any experiment to see where you may possibly paste the shortcut (programFiles directory?) or …
… this program I found on sourceForge.net seems cool – there’s a description of it here: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-make-your-own-windows-run-menu-shortcuts/ It lets you add start parameters or URLs or ID you force want to open with the program. It’s a small/portable app with no installation/setup necessary.
That article links to the small AddToRun program here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/addtorun/
[Additional edit, FYI: I just ran that program to add a "shortcut" to run a program I have installed. The exchange in my registry is this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SOFTWARE \Microsoft \Windows \CurrentVersion \App Paths \utest2.exe
I had to add spaces in that registry key so Yahoo Answers didn't cut it off. "utest2" was the name I gave. The value of this key is a string which is austerely the program's real name, in my case "uTorrent.exe"]
It worked. Excellent luck!
