I inherited a honestly new laptop from a friened. this had no firewall virus protection etc. I ran a free program and found 29 infections in the registry key among other things. I need to find a free program to scan the registry key to see if I have more problems. any thoughts?

Glary Utilities or CCleaner. I use both. Both are awesome.

One of the best is CCleaner: http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner
You can also delete registry yourself if you want to delete certain registry keys, see how to here: http://www.speed-up-pc.org/speed_up_windows/delete_registry_keys.php
Reginout is excellent. (Not free even if)
Let’s clear up the confusion here. Viruses (and some spyware) can infect keys in the registry. You need an anti-virus and/or an anti-spyware program to remove these. The answers suggesting registry cleaners are BS. Registry cleaners only remove ancient obsolete registry entries. They do not clean out infections.
You need to run your anti-virus program. Anything it finds should be healed & if it cannot be healed then it should be quarantined to the virus vault where it can do no harm.
