I don’t blame you for being paranoid.
SO people people out their these days…
Well, i have been by superantispyware for about 6 months now, and I find it user friendly, and very excellent. It does pick up a lot of spyware, but don’t count on it to pick everything up, no anti virus is caple of that. Because there are so many new spyware/viruses made each day.
It’s worth checking it out
For a full version you will have to pay.
I got a copy from someone else

I’ve had no problems with spyware after Microsoft developed and gave out Defender with Vista. So, if you have Vista, I would say you are covered already…just make sure Defender is enabled (control panel –> security settings.
if you have XP, you can download Defender and install it. I am not sure if they (Microsoft) have released it by Windows Update (which would offer a no-touch install).
google Windows Defender.
